Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Planning Policy Document

Summary

This report will provide details of the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Planning Policy Document (PPD) for Cabinet’s consideration.

The Regeneration, Community and Culture Overview and Scrutiny Committee considered a report on this matter in December 2013, following public consultation, in which a series of minor revisions and clarifications to the PPD had been proposed by officers. However, in January 2014, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) advised that it did not propose to progress Chatham's nomination for World Heritage Site (WHS) status, and adoption of the PPD was put on hold. In September 2014 the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Heritage Co-ordination Group (formerly the Chatham World Heritage steering group) considered that the Planning Policy Document remained valuable policy guidance, and that it should be put forward for adoption. A series of nomenclature and mapping changes will be made to reflect the decision not to pursue WHS status, but the document otherwise remains the same.
