Open canal road, bus lane during busy periods

We the undersigned petition the council to Put this in force. This simple adjustment would alleviate the unsustainable pressure on the Medway city estate and surrounding areas, reduce travel times, and restore fluidity to Strood’s road network.

The current traffic infrastructure surrounding Medway City Estate is no longer fit for purpose. Significant congestion frequently builds along Anthony’s Way, extending beyond the Neptune Roundabout to engulf both Whitewall Road and Sir Thomas Longley Road. Simultaneously, traffic tailbacks occur in the opposite direction on Whitewall Road toward Commissioners Road, largely due to the existing width restrictions.

These systemic delays are further exacerbated by frequent roadworks in Strood. A journey that should take 10 minutes routinely escalates into a 45-minute ordeal, reducing Strood town centre to a static parking lot.

The Case for Reforming 'Riverside' Access
Currently, the 'Riverside' section connecting Canal Road to Commissioners Road is restricted to buses, taxis, and bicycles. However, this restriction is inconsistently applied. The route is frequently used by a high volume of "exempt" vehicles, including:

Waste Management: Biffa, Veolia, and Norse bin lorries.

Utility & Maintenance: Medway Norse, Medway Highways, Clancy Traffic Management (CTM), and Volker Highways.

At peak times, these vehicles often outnumber the buses and taxis for which the route was intended. Given the extreme congestion facing commuters exiting the Medway City Estate, the current restricted-access policy is unjustifiable.
