Review Overly Restrictive Dropped Kerb Guidelines

We the undersigned petition the council to Review and amend the current dropped kerb guidelines, which are overly restrictive for our area. Many residents have sufficient space to build driveways and park safely on their property, but are prevented from installing a dropped kerb due to rules introduced in 2015. We request that the Council reinstates the previous, more proportionate guidelines or allows greater flexibility where conditions clearly permit.

The council should review the dropped kerb guidelines introduced in 2015, which are now outdated and overly restrictive.

Since these guidelines were introduced over a decade ago, circumstances have changed significantly. With the increasing uptake of electric vehicles, more residents require off-street parking to install EV chargers. Preventing dropped kerbs where space and safety allow risks discouraging the move to electric vehicles and prolonging reliance on petrol and diesel cars in Medway, which is not in line with environmental objectives.

In addition, limited on-street parking is already causing congestion and access issues. Allowing more households to create driveways would free up road space, reduce parking pressure and improve accessibility for residents, visitors and emergency services.
