Petition for Safer Roads in Cooling

We the undersigned petition the council to improve road safety in Cooling We, the undersigned, are raising serious concerns about the increasing danger posed by speeding vehicles through Cooling village. Main Road in Cooling is becoming increasingly unsafe, particularly for pedestrians, families, and pet owners. This is a trend which is only set to get worse with the increasing levels of housing in the neighbouring villages of High Halstow, Cliffe and Cliffe Woods with our road forming an ideal cut through between these villages. We call on the local council and traffic authorities to take urgent steps to address this issue, including: Reviewing and enforcing appropriate speed limits; Installing traffic calming measures (such as speed bumps or chicanes); Increasing signage to clearly indicate speed restrictions; Considering speed monitoring or enforcement measures.

Studies from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization consistently show that traffic calming measures—like speed bumps, signage, and road narrowing—can significantly reduce vehicle speeds and prevent accidents. Moreover, the UK Department for Transport's research indicates that such interventions have successfully reduced the risk of pedestrian accidents by 40% in areas where they have been implemented.

By installing traffic calming measures, we are not just slowing down vehicles; we are reclaiming the safety and serenity our village deserves. Speed bumps, flashing speed limit signs, and road narrowing features are tried and tested solutions that could improve the safety of every pedestrian in our village.

This is our opportunity to act before a tragedy strikes. I urge our local council and traffic authorities to prioritize the safety of our residents by introducing necessary traffic calming measures in our village.
