This crossing is urgently needed approximately 100 yards down Church Street, Cliffe, from the entrance of St Helens School. This exact spot is the main and most direct route used every single day by children and families walking from the school to the local children’s park directly opposite.
On the afternoon of Tuesday 12 May, a young child was hit by a car at this exact location. He has suffered a broken leg and a fracture to his hip, and is now facing a lengthy recovery from these serious injuries. This accident was completely avoidable — there is currently no safe, designated crossing point here at all.
At school drop-off and pick-up times, the road is very busy. Vehicles travel too fast, visibility is often poor, and there have been many near-misses reported by parents and residents over a long period. This incident proves how dangerous this stretch of road is.
A zebra crossing at this location will finally give pedestrians priority, stop speeding traffic, and ensure no other child has to suffer the same life-changing injuries as my son. It will allow our children to walk safely to and from school, and safely cross the road to enjoy the park.
We request Medway Council treat this as an absolute priority and install the crossing without delay.
