Purpose:

This report will seek Cabinet approval to go out to consultation on proposals to replace New Brompton College with a new academy in Gillingham.

Relevant Overview and Scrutiny Committee: Chilldren and Adults Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Decision:

13/2009 The Cabinet agreed to consultation on establishing a new co-educational school in Gillingham on the New Brompton College site and instructed officers to enter into negotiations with sponsors and to issue a statement of intent to form an Academy.

Reasons for the decision:

The Council has a statutory duty to ensure that an appropriate number of school places are available for Medway residents.The Council also has a statutory duty to ensure that its functions are exercised with a view to promoting high standards, ensuring fair access to educational opportunity and promoting the fulfilment by every child of his/her educational potential.
