Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Decision made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Cabinet on 2 September 2008 agreed to initiate public consultation on altering the age range of Luton Infant School, Chatham, so that children aged three years may be admitted into the Foundation Stage at the school with effect from January 2009. This report would report back on the consultation process.

Relevant Overview and Scrutiny Committee: Children and Adults

Decision:

227/2008 The Cabinet agreed to change the age range of Luton Infant School, Chatham, to permit the admission of children from the age of three years with effect from January 2009 and to publish a public notice to this effect.

Reasons for the decision:

The establishment of a Foundation Stage unit at Luton Infant School would be consistent with the Council's duty to secure an education place for all three and four year olds whose parents want one. As the admissions authority for community schools, Medway Council is responsible for determining whether to make a change to the published age range of the school. The Council, with the support of the governing body and the headteacher, consider that the change in age range to permit the admission of children from the age of three years will be the most effective means of raising standards of attainment at the school and improving life chances of children in the area.
