Purpose:

The Council has a statutory obligation to secure nursery education places for all eligible three- and four year-olds, and to improve early years outcomes for children.

This report proposes to initiate a public consultation on altering the age range of Luton Infant School, Chatham, so that children aged three years may be admitted into the Foundation Stage at the school with effect from January 2009.

Decision:

199/2008 The Cabinet agreed to consult on a proposed change to the age range of Luton Infant School, Chatham, to permit the admission of children from the age of 3 years with effect from January 2009.

Reasons for the decision:

The establishment of a Foundation Stage unit at Luton Infant School would be consistent with the Council's duty to secure an educational place for all three and four year olds whose parents want one. The initiation of the public consultation process will allow views on the merits of the proposal to be sought and considered in detail.
