To provide Cabinet with an overview of the provisional local government settlement. As of 2008/2009, local government will receive multi-year settlements that cover a 3 year period. So, in the latter part of 2007, local authorities will receive grant allocations that cover the period 2008/2009 to 2010/2011.

232/2007 The Cabinet noted the provisional settlement as an essential part of the budget setting process for 2008/2009.
233/2007 The Cabinet instructed officers to formulate a detailed response and make all necessary representations to government regarding the settlement.

These provisional levels of grant form a fundamental component of the 2008/09 budget, and their announcement is a further stage in the process of preparing a balanced budget.
