Decision details

Consumer Direct

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Decision made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Consumer Direct, a DTI sponsored regional call centre, will provide advice to Medway Consumers. In order to serve the interests of its customers, the Council has the opportunity of taking shares (which will cost £1) and (officer) representation on the Board of a company limited by guarantee along with other local authorities in the South East of England. This report asks Cabinet to decide whether to take representation on the board.

Decision:

4/2005 The Cabinet approved the purchase of a £1.00 share in Trading Standards South East Ltd.
5/2005 The Cabinet asked officers to maintain a local presence for consumers who prefer a locally based service but that officers configure services to channel calls towards Consumer Direct as expedient.
6/2005 The Cabinet noted that the Chief Executive, using delegated powers, will appoint an officer to serve on the board of Trading Standards South East Ltd.

Reasons for the decision:

In accepting a position on the Board of Directors of Trading Standards South East Ltd, the Council will best be able to maintain the current provision of high standards of consumer advice to Medway residents and to use data obtained to target enforcement activities.
