World Heritage Status for Chatham Historic Dockyard

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Decision made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Decision:

308/2005 The Cabinet approved, in principle, proceeding with the WHS bid subject to the allocation of resources by the Council and external sources.
309/2005 The Cabinet supported the appointment of a World Heritage Site coordinator and Assistant over a three-year period, once funding is identified.

Reasons for the decision:

A bid for World Heritage Site status for Chatham is a major project with a number of important implications. The recognition of the Dockyard and its Defences as being of world importance has its own significance. The potential benefits in terms of regeneration, tourism, civic pride and community engagement are also positive. It is therefore appropriate for the Council to progress with a bid.
