Annual Public Health Report

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Decision made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

This will be the first Annual Public Health Report for the Medway. It is a statutory report, which is an important vehicle for informing local people about the health of their community, as well as providing necessary information for decision makers in the NHS and the local authority about health gaps and priorities. The report will outline what is currently happening in Medway to improve health, and sets the context for reducing health inequalities and promote action for better health in Medway in the context of the recent Public Health White Paper, Choosing Health.

Decision:

195/2005 The Cabinet endorsed the Director of Public Health's Annual Report for wide dissemination and discussion, and agreed to receive regular updates on the actions being taken to reduce health inequalities in Medway.
196/2005 The Cabinet requested that the Health and Community Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee consider the merits of establishing a smoking ban in all Council-owned premises and to examine the implications of a smoking ban in all public places, reporting back to Cabinet.

Reasons for the decision:

Every local authority is required to consider and endorse the report of its Director of Public Health as the basis for a series of actions designed to tackle health inequalities and reduce ill health in its area.
