Under the National Accreditation Scheme for Museums and Galleries (Phase 3) the museum service must have a comprehensive written Acquisition and Disposal Policy.

Decision:

198/2008 The Cabinet agreed to approve and adopt the Museum Acquisition and Disposal Policy 2008 - 2012 subject to the Director of Regeneration, Community and Culture, in consultation with the Portfolio Holder for Community Services, making the revisions as set out in section 3 of the addendum report.

Reasons for the decision:

The policy follows sound museum management practice, providing a platform for the service to continue to meet accreditation standards while offering suitable procedures for any purchase or disposal decisions. Only museums that achieve and maintain accredited status are eligible for grant aid funding from key external sources such as the Heritage Lottery Fund.
