This report proposes changes to the Council's
School Transport Policy with effect from January 2009.
144/2008 The Cabinet agreed to authorise the
Director of Children and Adults, in consultation with the Portfolio
Holder for Children's Services to:
a) Undertake statutory consultation on the proposal to amend the
mainstream school transport policy with effect from January 2009,
such that for the purpose of travel assistance, the Hundred of Hoo
Comprehensive, and the St John Fisher Catholic Comprehensive
schools would no longer be deemed to be the nearest appropriate
school for those Year 7 pupils deemed selective.
b) Determine whether to amend the school transport policy as
outlined above at the end of the statutory consultation process
including the consideration of any objections.
This change will make consistent arrangements
across the whole Medway Council area with regard to travel to
grammar schools. Introducing the change with effect from January
2009 for those newly commencing their secondary education will
ensure a transparent and accountable process for ensuring that the
determination of the nearest appropriate school is correctly
applied.
