Decision status: Decision made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The White Paper 'Care Matters: Time for Change' proposes that all local authorities design a pledge for the children in its care. Following discussion with the children in our care this report will propose a pledge for Medway.

Decision:

214/2007 The Cabinet approved the Medway Pledge as set out in Appendix 2 to the report, and that the Director of Children's Services has responsibility for implementing the Medway Pledge across the Council.

Reasons for the decision:

Every local authority has a role in supporting prosperous, inclusive and strong communities where individuals are valued. In relation to children this means ensuring that every child whatever their circumstances can achieve their full potential and make the most of their talents. As corporate parents, elected members are responsible for all aspects of the welfare of children and young people in their care, as if they were a parent. This means securing the best possible outcomes for them in their care, their schooling, in their social life and in their ability to play a positive role as part of society.Adopting and ensuring delivery of this pledge will demonstrate that Elected Members show leadership in this critical aspect of their role.
